Stockton Street Light Project

August 22, 2011

The Stockton community began working on the installation of twenty-eight new street lights for their neighborhood in 2008. The Stockton Street Lights Project has garnered a tremendous amount of support from the local residents and, when completed, will result in a safe and more secure environment for the families living in this area.

Early in January 2011, I was approached by the San Diego Organizing Project, a nonprofit community group in Stockton, asking for my support in expediting this project since it appeared that it was being delayed due to numerous issues concerning easements and connection problems. The City's Street Division engineers identified the locations for each light, and my staff has diligently obtained owner participation agreements from each owner, which were provided to the Street Division in the first week of last May. This should have been the catalyst to get this project rolling again.

After requesting an update last month, my staff was told that the City would start digging trenches in mid-August, and that the project would be completed shortly thereafter. When my staff asked for another update a couple of weeks later, I was told that the commencement of the project was imminent.

Unfortunately, I was informed last week that it may take, at the very least, an additional four months for the work to begin, if not longer. This lengthy, arbitrary delay has deeply dismayed the resident groups that have supported this project for several years.

I respectfully request that work on this project begin as soon as possible, and that the installation of all lights is completed by the end of this calendar year.
