San Diego City Council to Consider Approval of Cross Border Facility in Otay Mesa

January 9, 2011

Who: Councilmember David Alvarez

What: City Council will consider approval of the Cross Border Facility Project

When: Tuesday, January 10 at 2PM

Where: City Hall, 202 C Street, 12th Floor, San Diego

Why: The City Council will consider approval of the unique Cross Border Facility in Otay Mesa.  The privately-funded project will provide a terminal-like facility on the US side of the International Border to access the Tijuana International Airport via a 500-foot long bridge.  Ticketed passengers can opt to use the fee-based facility to bypass border waits at traditional ports of entry in Otay Mesa and San Ysidro, but will still require all federal inspections.  The airport, known as Rodriguez Field, serves many international destinations not currently served by Lindbergh Field and has the capacity to expand well into the future.  The Cross Border Facility will serve as an economic engine for the region, especially the county’s manufacturing sector.
