Alvarez on Zero Waste Plan Vote

July 13, 2015

SAN DIEGO (July 13, 2015) – Councilmember Alvarez has issued the following statement in response to the San Diego City Council’s approval today of the Zero Waste Plan (which establishes a framework for achieving the City’s waste goals of 75% diversion by 2020, 90% by 2035, and Zero Waste by 2040) for the City of San Diego :

“I was proud to hear this item at my committee and support it today at Council. This framework is the beginning of a focused effort to increase our diversion rate, it is not an endpoint.

No one action is a silver bullet to achieve zero waste, but not acting is unacceptable. With today's action, our Council sent a unanimous message that environmental preservation is a top priority both in the short and long-term.

We are also moving forward to gather more information so we have a clear and comprehensive view of the potential solutions.  Studying an exclusive franchise system, as discussed by our City Auditor, may give us one of the best tools available to achieve these ambitious goals.
