My parents came to the U.S. looking for an opportunity. My father was a farmworker in the agricultural labor program Bracero, and through hard work my mother and father created the opportunity for a better future for me and my siblings. Driven by my faith, values, and dedication to community, my work has been focused on providing others with opportunities to grow, prosper, and improve their lives. As a community organizer and a Councilmember, I fought passionately to create these opportunities. Like my parents, my family, and myself, everyone should have the opportunity to work hard and be able build a better future for San Diego.
Over the past decade, we have fought for and brought many changes to San Diego. Whether I was fighting for new and improved park and library spaces across San Diego or fighting for a real solution to our housing crisis, I have been driven by the need to create opportunities for everyone.
During the past 10 years, we have achieved significant improvements, but there is still a lot of work to be done. By working together and by advocating for ourselves, we can make sure that our neighborhoods are not neglected or forgotten in the future.
